– Gonococcal conjunctivitis. This type of conjunctivitis is caused by a bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoea, a sexually transmitted infection passed by the mother to her baby during childbirth. Symptoms include red eyes, thick discharge of pus in the eyes, and swelling that begins 2 to 4 days after birth.

– Use a separate towel for your baby and see to it that no one uses it. Wash it at a high temperature.
– Always see to it that you wash your hands thoroughly before and after cleaning your baby’s eyes
– See to it that the whole family washes their hands throughout the day.
